Belgorod stands on the Seversky Donets in southwestern Russia, close to the Ukrainian border. It was largely rebuilt after the Second World War and has a compact, orderly centre of white-stone buildings from which the name derives.
The Prokhorovka battlefield to the north, site of a major armoured engagement during the Battle of Kursk, is the principal historical site in the region and holds a large memorial complex. The city's proximity to the border means conditions there are affected by the ongoing conflict, and current guidance should be checked before any travel.
Buses and trolleybuses cover the city and the centre is walkable. Rail connections run north toward Moscow.
