Bawshar is a wilayat of Muscat rather than a separate city, spreading inland from the coast behind the capital's older districts. It is largely residential and administrative, with modern low-rise development laid out between the Hajar mountain foothills.
The area itself is residential, and the sights of Muscat lie along the coast to the north, including the old town at Mutrah with its corniche and souq. The sand dunes on the edge of the wilayat and the mountain wadis behind are the nearest natural attractions.
A car is effectively necessary, as Muscat is spread thinly along the coast and public transport is limited. Taxis and ride-hailing operate throughout, and distances between districts are considerable.
The cooler months from late autumn to early spring are much the most comfortable, with warm days and mild evenings. Summers on this coast are extremely hot and humid and make daytime activity difficult.
