Bandar Abbas is Iran's principal southern port, on the Strait of Hormuz facing the Gulf. The city runs along the shore with the harbour and the corniche at its centre, and the climate is dramatically hotter and more humid than inland Iran.
The seafront and the covered bazaar are the city's main interest, and the bazaar reflects long trading links across the Gulf. The islands offshore are the real draw, particularly Hormuz with its extraordinary coloured mineral soils and red beaches, and Qeshm with its geological formations and mangroves.
Shared taxis cover the city and the corniche is walkable in the cooler hours. Ferries and speedboats reach the islands from the port, and flights connect to Tehran and Shiraz.
The cooler months from late autumn to early spring are the only comfortable time and are the island season. Summers here are extremely hot and humid and outdoor activity is impractical.
