Baiyin lies in central Gansu on the Yellow River, in dry loess country northeast of Lanzhou. It is a mining and non-ferrous metals city, developed in the Soviet-influenced industrial period.
The city is industrial rather than a destination. The Yellow River stone forest at Jingtai within the prefecture is a striking landscape of eroded pillars in a desert canyon, reached by donkey cart and increasingly popular, and the Silk Road sites of Gansu lie further west.
Buses and taxis cover the city, and reaching the stone forest requires a hired car or organised trip. Rail connections run to Lanzhou in around an hour.
Late spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summers are hot and dry, winters are cold, and spring can bring dust off the loess plateau.

China uses the renminbi, quoted in yuan, and Mandarin is the standard language with a strong regional accent. Mobile payment is near-universal.
