Bahir Dar sits on the southern shore of Lake Tana in northwestern Ethiopia, at the point where the Blue Nile leaves the lake. It is an unusually green and orderly city by regional standards, with palm-lined avenues along the lakeshore.
The island monasteries of Lake Tana, some dating from the fourteenth century and holding remarkable painted interiors, are reached by boat and are the principal draw. The Blue Nile Falls downstream are the other main excursion, and the lakeshore itself is pleasant for walking, with hippos sometimes visible near the outlet.
The lakeshore and centre are walkable, with bajaj three-wheelers for longer distances. Boats to the monasteries leave from the waterfront, and the airport connects to Addis Ababa and Gondar.
The dry months from around October to March are much the best, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures at this altitude. The summer rains make the falls far more impressive but complicate travel.
