Bafoussam is the principal city of Cameroon's West Region, set in the Bamileke highlands at altitude, which gives it a cooler climate than the coast. The centre is built around its markets, and the surrounding hills are intensively farmed and densely settled.
The city is a commercial hub for the highlands, and its markets are the main point of interest, busiest in the morning. The surrounding Bamileke chiefdoms with their distinctive palaces and carved architecture are the regional cultural draw, and the volcanic crater lakes of the highlands lie within reach.
Shared taxis and motorcycle taxis are the standard transport, and the market area is walkable. Roads connect south toward Douala and the coast, and mountain routes can be slow.
