Bắc Từ Liêm is a district in the northwest of Hanoi rather than a separate city, created relatively recently from a rural area absorbed into the expanding capital. It mixes new apartment developments with surviving craft villages and farmland.
The district retains several traditional craft villages, including ones known for paper and for flowers, which give it a character quite different from central Hanoi. The Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem lake and the main museums are a ride to the southeast, and West Lake lies between.
