Atyrau stands at the mouth of the Ural river on the Caspian in western Kazakhstan, and is the centre of the country's oil industry. The river runs through the middle of the city and is conventionally taken as part of the boundary between Europe and Asia, so a bridge here crosses between continents.
The continental boundary bridge is the city's quirk, with markers on each bank. The city is otherwise a working oil town with a modern mosque and a regional museum, and the Caspian shore and the delta wetlands, important for sturgeon and birdlife, lie beyond.
Taxis and buses cover the city, and the riverside is walkable. The airport connects to Almaty, Astana and several international destinations serving the oil industry.
Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable. Summers on the Caspian lowland are very hot, and winters are cold with strong winds off the steppe.
