    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Aswān sits on the Nile in southern Egypt where the river broadens around granite islands and desert comes down to the water. The corniche along the east bank holds most hotels and the souq, while Elephantine Island and the west bank are quieter and more Nubian in character.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

The river itself is the attraction, best seen from a felucca under sail in the late afternoon when the light on the dunes is at its best. The Philae temple on its island, the unfinished obelisk in the ancient granite quarries and the High Dam are the principal sites, and Abu Simbel is reachable as a long day trip south.

    Transit notes

The corniche and souq are walkable, and small boats are the natural way to cross to the islands and the west bank. Taxis and horse carriages cover longer distances, and the road and rail line run north along the Nile.

    Best time to visit

    Seasons & timing

The cooler months from autumn to early spring are much the best, with warm days and cold desert nights. Summer heat here is extreme and makes midday sightseeing genuinely difficult.
