Artux is the capital of the Kizilsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture in western Xinjiang, near the Kyrgyz border. It sits on the edge of the Tarim basin with the Pamir and Tian Shan ranges rising nearby, and the population is largely Uyghur and Kyrgyz.
The town is administrative, and the region around it is the interest, with high mountain country toward the Irkeshtam and Torugart passes into Kyrgyzstan. Kashgar, the great Silk Road oasis city with its Sunday livestock market, is a short distance southwest and is the region's principal destination.
Buses and shared taxis connect to Kashgar in under an hour. Travel in this region involves checkpoints and documentation, and current requirements are worth confirming well in advance.
Late spring through early autumn is the only comfortable window, and is also when the mountain passes are open. Winters are severely cold, and summers in the basin are very hot.
