Armenia is the capital of Quindío in Colombia's coffee region, set on hills between two Andean ranges. The city is compact and modern, having been largely rebuilt after an earthquake, and is the base for the surrounding coffee country.
The Cocora valley, where wax palms of extraordinary height rise from cloud-forest pasture, is the region's outstanding landscape and is walked from the village of Salento. The coffee farms around the city receive visitors, and the region's cultural landscape holds World Heritage status.
Buses reach Salento and the surrounding towns, and jeeps run from Salento to the valley. The city itself is walkable in the centre.
