    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Alicante sits on the Costa Blanca in southeastern Spain, beneath a castle-topped rock overlooking the harbour. The old quarter of Santa Cruz climbs the hillside in narrow whitewashed lanes, while the Explanada promenade and the beach run along the seafront below.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

Santa Bárbara castle on its crag gives a commanding view over the city and the bay and is reached by a lift cut into the rock. The palm-lined Explanada with its wave-patterned marble paving is the city's signature promenade, and the archaeological museum is unusually good.
