Alanya sits on Turkey's Mediterranean coast beneath a rocky headland crowned by a Seljuk castle, with long beaches stretching either side. The old town climbs the headland, while the modern resort strip runs along the shore and holds most of the hotels.
The castle on the promontory is extensive and gives views along the whole coast, best in the late afternoon. The red tower and the medieval shipyard on the harbour are well preserved, and the Damlataş cave beside the beach and boat trips around the headland are the standard excursions.
The seafront and old harbour are walkable, and dolmuş minibuses run along the coast road. The castle is a steep climb best done by bus or taxi, and the nearest airports are along the coast to the west.
Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable, with warm sea and manageable heat. Midsummer is very hot and crowded, and winters are mild and quiet with some rain.
