Al Maḩmūdīyah lies on the Euphrates-fed farmland south of Baghdad, on the main road toward Karbala and the south. It is an agricultural town within the capital's wider orbit, and its recent history has been marked by the conflict of the past decades.
The town is agricultural and administrative rather than a destination. Baghdad lies immediately north, and the Shia holy cities of Karbala and Najaf, which draw very large numbers of pilgrims, are further south along the same road.
