Aksaray sits on the central Anatolian plateau in Turkey, at the western edge of the Cappadocia region beneath the volcanic cone of Hasan Dağı. The town is modest and functional, and serves as a base for the valleys and caravan routes around it.
The Ihlara valley, a deep green gorge cut into the plateau with Byzantine rock-cut churches along its walls, is the main attraction and is walked along the river at its floor. The Sultanhanı caravanserai on the old Silk Road east of the town is among the largest and best preserved in Anatolia.
The town centre is walkable and buses connect to the valley and the caravanserai. A car is helpful for the wider Cappadocia region, whose main tourist centre at Göreme is around an hour east.
Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable for walking the valley. Summers on the plateau are hot and dry, and winters are cold with snow.
