Adıyaman lies in southeastern Turkey on the plain below the Taurus foothills, near the Euphrates. It is a modest provincial city, and serves as the base for one of Turkey's most extraordinary sites.
Mount Nemrut, an hour and a half north, carries the tomb sanctuary of a Commagene king with colossal stone heads of gods scattered across two terraces at over two thousand metres, and is a World Heritage site best seen at sunrise or sunset. The Arsameia ruins and the Roman Cendere bridge are on the same route, and the region was affected by the major earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey.
Reaching Nemrut requires an organised trip or hired car, and the summit involves a short steep walk. The city itself is compact, and buses connect across the southeast.
Late spring through early autumn is the only reliable window for Nemrut, as the summit road is closed by snow in winter. Summers on the plain are very hot, though the mountain is cool at dawn even then.
