Abomey-Calavi has grown into an extension of Cotonou on the northern shore of Lake Nokoué, and is now among the largest urban areas in Benin. It is largely residential with a substantial university presence, and the lakeshore is its defining edge.
The stilt village of Ganvié out on Lake Nokoué is the main attraction, reached by pirogue from the shore and best visited in the morning. The lake itself, with its fish traps and boat traffic, is the region's distinctive landscape.
Motorcycle taxis are the standard way of getting around and are ubiquitous. Shared vehicles connect to Cotonou, and the lake crossings are made by motorised pirogue from the landing points on the shore.
