The historic old town is the most atmospheric place to base a stay, with its ancient streets and gates within easy walking distance of local shops and restaurants. Newer parts of town further out are more modern but less distinctive.
Jianshui's well-preserved old town, with its historic gate and traditional courtyard houses, is best explored in the cooler morning hours given the region's highland subtropical climate. Nearby limestone caves and karst scenery reward a full day trip.
The old town center is compact and walkable, while local buses and taxis serve the newer parts of the city and surrounding countryside. A car or organized tour is useful for reaching nearby caves and scenic areas.
Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures in this highland region of Yunnan, which sees a milder climate overall than much of lowland China. Summer can bring afternoon showers, so mornings are generally the more reliable time for sightseeing.
